This page is dedicated to the best Oysters and the best Oyster Company in the world – Island Creek Oysters .  Why Island Creek – well a few reasons – one they are consistantly some of the best if not they best oysters on the planet, plus they are harvested right here in our backyard down in Duxbury.

Island Creek Oysters are never milky (I guess because they are celibate), always have a wonderful sweet yet briny yet smooth yet fantastic taste. In many ways they are almost perfect – they are fit to be on the plate on the finest restaurants in the world – and are humble enough to be found at the supermarket.  You can even treat them as ambassadors for other oysters if you have a friend who claims to not like oysters – order some Island Creek – and I promise you they will admit to themselves – ‘….. that really was pretty good’ – everyone likes them.

So – on to this page:

This page will be a work in progress – trying to update you on the latest oyster prices – news and anything else oyster related.  It will also showcase some of BFG’s favorite raw bar locations as well as trying to give updates when a raw bar excels and when it falls short.

Favorite Raw Bars:

Oceanaire – daily $1.50 oyster of the day bar deals
Neptunes – North End
Eastern Standard - Kenmore
Plaza III – Financial District (No Island Creek when I went – but everything else was great)

Raw Bars that need help:

Tavern on the Water – Charlestown (oysters dripping in water – ice melting over the plate – just gross)
Union Oyster House – really – I get it – you’re running on your reputation and tourists – but you can and should represent Boston a bit better

From A Geography of Oysters, Rowan Jacobsen:

A raw oyster was not designed for our pleasure. Appreciating it is more like catching a glimpse of a fox in the woods: The experience lasts only a moment but leaves us in a fleeting state of grace. ”
